About

WHO ARE WE?
We are a research team composed of professors, researchers, Ph.D., and Master students belonging mainly to the University of Torino and Makerere University. The current Mission Director is Professor Alessandro Gusman (University of Torino).

WHAT DO WE DO?
The team is dedicated to ethnological, ethnohistorical, and ethnomusicological research in equatorial Africa, particularly in Uganda. In addition to research, it also carries out teaching and disclosure activities.

HISTORY
The Mission was founded in 1979 by Francesco Remotti under the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Initially, the research was concentrated in the current Democratic Republic of Congo (then called Zaire). Later, the research field moved first to Burundi and then to Cameroon and Uganda. In the early 2000s, the Mission focused exclusively on Great Lakes Africa and Uganda, where it has been operating for twenty years.
